If you aren't confident in your ability to protect your personal info, you shouldn't be investing in crypto.

All Cryptocurrencies

With all of the "I've been hacked" posts I've seen lately, whether or not they're real or fake, I feel like I need to say this, even though it really shouldn't need to be said:

If you aren't confident in your ability to protect your personal info from shady links, calls from the "IRS," accidental misclicks, or automatic downloads, you should NOT be investing in crypto.

To be clear, I'm not trying to be elitist, and I'm not trying to make anyone feel stupid. But if you're a person that doesn't think twice about storing your seed phrase in a .txt on your desktop; if you search Google for the websites you need and don't think twice about clicking on the first ad; if you would click on a link for a "blind-box NFT giveaway" without hesitation because who doesn't want free NFTs?-- You shouldn't invest all of your life savings into something you can immediately lose by doing any one of those things. There's no room for mistakes in the crypto sphere (unless you know what you're doing and have failsafes to protect yourself, like not holding all of your tokens in a single wallet), because there are plenty of people waiting for you to slip.

If you really insist on holding $120,000 worth of ETH, you need to know how to hold it responsibly. You are infinitely more likely to lose your tokens by making a mistake than by having someone reenact the hacking scene from Independence Day to clean out your ledger.

If you aren't familiar with how to keep your personal info safe, I highly encourage you to take the time and learn. You'll thank yourself by not ending up as the next trending "I got hacked and lost all of my money (except I clicked on a link my Discord friend sent me two days ago and entered my seed phrase)" post on the sub.

EDIT: As suggested, I'm adding a few simple tips from my comment below. If anyone has anything they'd like to suggest, I'd be more than happy to keep adding to the list!

  1. Don't ever share your seed phrase with anyone.

  2. Don't manually enter web addresses (and risk typos), always bookmark.

  3. Don't click on links you don't recognize.

  4. Try not to keep all of your tokens in one hot wallet (a digital wallet rather than a hardware wallet). That way if one wallet is compromised, you won't lose everything.

  5. If you're in any Discord or Telegram groups, make sure you know who the mods are, and how they'll contact you if they need to. 10 times out of 10, they won't need to contact you for any reason, especially not to offer surprise giveaways or ask for your Metamask login information.
